Event date: 17 August 2017
August 2017 Johannesburg Members’ Business Briefing, with guest speaker Dr Rutendo Hwindingwi, Associate Director for Deloitte.
Johannesburg based Chamber members were in for a smash hit as our August Business Briefing featured speaker Dr.Rutendo Hwindingwi, and a short introductory talk by Tom Moody from the British High Commission’s Prosperity Fund.
Tom Moody – Head of Prosperity and Policy Programmes for Southern Africa – opened the evening’s presentation with a few words on the UK’s lookout regarding international trade, particularly opening up new markets and an increasingly outward-focused trade policy. His team had some visiting members representing the business units for Future Cities, Healthcare and ITC, which are some of their exciting key focus areas moving into the future.
Dr.Hwindingwi spoke on the topic “Leadership strategies for staying relevant on the continent” – a topic of huge interest to our members. Using the famous boxing match between Mohammad Ali and George Foreman that took place in 1974 – where underdog Ali famously defeated the reigning champion and favourite Foreman – as an example of two key principles that may be applied in business strategy, Dr.Hwindingwi showed the power of knowing your territory and being innovative in designing and implementing a winning business plan.
Africa presents a territory that comes with lots of opportunity, risk and unpredictability, but also enormous potential reward to those who are willing to shift the way they perceive Africa, as Dr.Hwindingwi demonstrated. Members delighted in the punchy presentation and were left energised and inspired to take on the great Africa challenge.
“I find that the British Chamber events are always enjoyable, the August briefing’s guest speaker Rutendo Hwindingwi, is an energetic speaker that is passionate about growing Africa’s business sector ” – Neetesh Vanmari, Investec
